The course at Newmarket (July)
The July Course is Newmarket's summer track, used from June to August and well known for its evening meetings. Races up to a mile are run on a straight course, the Bunbury Mile, which runs downhill into a dip before rising to the finish. Longer races start on a separate course and turn right-handed into the long straight. The going is often quicker than on the Rowley Mile in midsummer.
Betting at Newmarket (July)
As on the Rowley Mile, the field can split and one side can be quicker, so early races on the card are a useful guide to the draw. The final climb rewards horses that see their trip out, which matters most for sprinters stepping up in distance. The July Festival two-year-old races regularly produce Group-race winners later in the year.
