The course at Sandown
Sandown Park is a right-handed oval of about a mile and five furlongs with a stiff uphill finish, plus a separate five-furlong course. The jumps course includes the Railway Fences, a series of seven fences close together on the back straight that test a chaser's accuracy and rhythm. The long climb from the home turn to the line is one of the most testing finishes in the country.
Betting at Sandown
The stiff finish means stamina counts for a lot, even over shorter trips, and horses that have proved they get up the hill are worth preferring. Over fences, the Railway Fences catch out sloppy jumpers, so jumping form is especially important. On the five-furlong course, the draw is often a significant factor depending on where the stalls are placed.
