The course at Ascot
Ascot is a right-handed, roughly triangular course of about a mile and six furlongs, with a separate straight mile used for races up to a mile. The round course runs downhill from Swinley Bottom before a long climb to the line, so races here reward stamina and a horse that keeps galloping all the way to the post. The jumps course runs inside the Flat track and is just as demanding: big, well-built fences and the same uphill finish.
Betting at Ascot
The stiff finish means front-runners who go too hard often get caught in the last furlong, and horses who have only won on sharp, flat tracks can find it too much. Big Flat fields on the straight course regularly split into two groups, so it is worth noting which side is favoured on the day before betting in the later races. Over jumps, proven stamina and sound jumping count for more than raw speed.
