The course at York
York is a wide, flat, left-handed horseshoe of about two miles, with a long home straight and a separate six-furlong straight course. It is one of the fairest tracks in the country: there are no real gradients, and horses can race wherever they are best suited. Ground on the Knavesmire can dry quickly in summer.
Betting at York
On a flat, galloping track the best horse usually wins, and form from York transfers well to other big tracks. Sprints are run at a strong gallop, and horses that hold a good position near the pace often fare well. In big handicaps, look at which part of the track has been riding fastest on the day, as the field can come up the centre or towards one rail.
