The Illusion of the Final Time
Relying solely on the final time of a race to judge a horse's ability is akin to judging a football match only by the final score. It tells you the outcome, but it tells you nothing about how the game was played. In horse racing, the pace of the race dictates everything.
If the leaders set a blistering early pace, they will inevitably tire, allowing the late closers to sweep past. Conversely, if the early pace is a slow crawl, the leaders will have plenty of energy in reserve for a sprint finish, making it mathematically impossible for the closers to catch them, regardless of their underlying ability.
The Power of Sectionals
Sectional timing breaks the race down into discrete segments (furlongs or 200m blocks). By analyzing these individual sections, our AI can determine the true energy expenditure of every horse in the race.
Our models identify horses that achieve "par-breaking" sectionals. If a horse runs the final two furlongs of a race significantly faster than the class average, it indicates elite acceleration and latent ability. If that horse was compromised by a slow early pace and finished fourth, the general public will dismiss it. Our models, however, will flag that horse's closing sectionals as elite, identifying it as a prime value bet next time out.
Pace Mapping the Future
By compiling the historical sectional data of every horse in an upcoming race, our AI constructs a "Pace Map." This simulates the likely early speed of the race, determining which horses will get an easy lead and which will be caught in a destructive speed duel. By combining this Pace Map with projected finishing speeds, we can predict the race script with remarkable accuracy.
